based on the stats we were lucky not to be thrashed let alone sneak a draw. I see QPR are letting Cisse go - now he would add bite to our toothless attack, but then again Gartside would't recognise a real forward if he saw one

Looking at transfer stats yesterday and its clear we haven't really spent any money of significance on players for years (net in / out)..... So I'm not holding my breath now.....

The stats don't tell the whole story at all. Sunderland may have had 64% of the ball, but most of that was in their own half. They might have had 16 attempts, but most of them were awful, particularly from Fletcher. They might have had 16 corners, but most of them hit the first man. Sunderland looked like a side destined for a season-long relegation struggle and the Championship would be about their level at the moment. I was surprised to see that the attendance was as high as 12,204 - Sunderland packed their end out but I had most of the rest of the stadium to myself. Shame, really - when I first started watching Bolton, FA Cup Third Round day was an important day.

Agree with robmoss about the FA Cup, its our premier cup competition steeped in history, as a kid I remember the 5th round tie against Liverpool in the 60's, 58,000 crammed into Burnden Park. Also remember a 3rd round tie against Everton, played in the snow at Burnden using an orange ball, poor Peter Reid who was at his prime suffered an horrific double fracture of the ankle, just 10 minutes before half time when another snow storm caused the ref to abandon the game. Another 3rd round moment in the mid 70's - we played Southampton away, the greatest high of my life - Johnny Byrom single handedly scored 2 goals in the last 10 minutes to make it 3-3, he ran from the half way line, beat 3 defenders on each occasion in the mud and pouring rain to score, I was dancing in the rain all the way back to the train station - they where the days !! oh - we lost the replay but who cares - memories are priceless. You would go out in town on Saturday night and most of the team would be their in the club, Allardyce, Reid, Whatmore, Jones, etc, all approachable and good for a joke, no big time charlies, no stupid wages, etc.

More massaged attendance figures? Why are they doing this? Embarrassment? I see Blackburn are being accused of the same thing. I had a ticket but was laid up in bed with the lurgy but always doubt the figures as I look around me at the huge gaps of empty seats in every section of the library/morgue.

I listened to the game on Tower FM and wondered, after seeing those stats whether the commentators were being a little carried away with their praise of Bolton but also noticed Marc Iles said it was exciting. Your comments seem to endorse their views Rob - cheers.

And yeah I also listened on Tower and it didn't seem like Sunderland dominated that much...

In case you haven't heard, good news at last. Wheater and Mavies pencilled in for the match tomorrow as well as Vela and Holden. All coming back at once, it seems... '...like four new signings' must get said at some point?
