BWFC: Just A Small One- Update

BWFC: Just A Small One- Update

So that`s the end of that then.

Whether you were excited about the rumours regarding the pursuit of free-agent, versatile defender Chris Baird or not, it would seem speculation was wide of the mark.

Initially, I thought the move whiffed a bit of desperation, when it was announced Baird played at full-back. Bringing in a player as cover for our starting full-backs- when our starting central defenders are stinking up the joint- didn`t make much sense. But after learning that Baird preferred to play in the heart of the back line, I thought maybe Dougie was planning a clandestine manoeuvre to bring Baird in to replace Zat Knight.

Sadly not.

Whatever my thoughts, your thoughts or anyone`s thoughts regarding Chris Baird were, Bolton Wanderers will not be moving for the versatile defender.

So they say, anyway...

Let's hope Douglas has someone else in mind.

Re: my comments on PG in the previous article - may I just point out that I really don't want to stick up for the guy. But football clubs give managers power for a reason. If you don't let the manager decide pretty much everything except for what the budget is - and he'll come and moan at you if it isn't big enough - then you either have a hopeless manager, or your manager walks. Beyond hiring and firing, plus controlling spending, the chairman is fairly powerless. You can't blame the club's failings on Phil Gartside. I will admit, I don't think he's particularly good, he made a very shrewd move in appointing Big Sam and I think he's made a number of poor ones since. I think he's pulled another masterstroke getting DF. The club is on a fairly sound financial footing as long as Eddie Davies is still alive, and even when he's gone I'm sure things will be written into the contracts we have to make sure the plug can't be pulled, and we have Phil Gartside to thank for negotiating the filling of the 136m black hole which would otherwise have seen us march headlong into liquidation, probable double or treble relegations and many seasons of "rebuilding". So don't be too harsh on the guy unless something's gone wrong that genuinely is his fault. He should have sacked OC sooner, he should never have hired Megson. But is he some sort of harbinger of doom? Not really.

Some stats regarding our current defence and a certain weak link. http://www.lionofviennasuite.com/2013/8/19/4636756/a-comparison-of-boltons-defenders-through-the-numbers#comments

Stats can sometimes be misleading, but the stats in the comments section really condemn Knight. Surely if the Lion of Vienna Suite can highlight this Dougie must have his own guys pointing it out to him?

Anyone who can go on National television, as Gartside did, and speak disparagingly about Sam Allardyce's tenure as manager, doesn't get my vote as Bolton's chairman! Anyone in his position, should have put personal grievances to one side and thank the man for eight wonderful years!...Having said that, I think Rob is basically correct in his assumption, that he is not directly to blame for Bolton's woes on the field! That, I presume is a more complex matter!

And whilst I would argue that PG doing that interview probably didn't do anything to contribute to what's been happening on the field, that is, however, exactly why I don't want to stick up for the guy.
