BWFC: Pay Us Again, Sam.

BWFC: Pay Us Again, Sam.

Sam Ricketts has left Bolton Wanderers and joined Wolves as expected. What has come as a shock, however, is the fee paid for our versatile defender… Nothing, nada, zip… A big fat zilch!

After the coup of landing Alex Baptiste from under the noses of several interested parties, Mr Ricketts was always going to struggle to convince both the manager and fans he was still worthy of the starting right-back slot. Cover for the full-back positions however, are currently sparse at the Reebok, so Ricketts was by no means overly surplus to requirements. So when Sam`s name was quickly circulated to depart the club following Baptiste`s arrival, my understanding was the Whites had decided cash in on the player while they still could; an astute bit of business; especially when our Wanderer counterparts had shown an immediate monetary interest.

With fee agreed and medical ensuing, our Wanderers decide to cancel Ricketts` contract, wrap him in Wanderer-logo paper and deliver him to Wolves free of charge. Something has obviously happened during the conclusion of negotiations. Maybe we will never discover what. But with the Financial Fair Play regulations kicking in this season and Bolton`s supposed astronomical debt, you would think £2-3 hundred thousand would go some way to balancing the books this fiscal financial year?
But, hey, what do I know, right?

Who else was interested in him? Who did he want to go to? Wolves probably offered a fee (as reported) but what were his wage demands? Rather than risk him not going we have probably done what is best for all parties, we get him off the wage bill, they dont have to pay a fee, Ricketts gets a good move to a big club. I never rated him to be honest, it was only the fact that he was marginally better than Robinson and Mears injuries/lack of ability that he was worth keeping.

There could have been something in Ricketts' contract which entitled him to compensation if the deal was broken, which wouldn't have applied if the deal was mutually cancelled. I have no idea but it's just a theory, such clauses are not unusual. In any case, the tax payable on the transfer fee and the relevant accountancy overhead might have made whatever fee was agreed uneconomical anyway.

So if Tierny gets injured, who goes in left back?
