'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Bolton Wanderers: Only When I Laugh

Two weeks ago, Owen Coyle said that he did not read blogs and had little interest in social media. When he wakes up this morning, he may find that that is a good job as another tactical blunder sent Bolton out of the League Cup at the second round stage for only the third time in eleven years.

There are those who will say 'well, it's only the League Cup, there are other things to worry about this season'. And while they will be correct on the latter part of the sentence, they are wide of the mark on the first. Losing to a team from a division marks you as a team. The League Cup may be looked upon as an irrelevance by teams trying to fit European games into their schedule, but for those below, a good cup run can bring confidence to a team that can be reflected in their league form. And if you don't believe that, then you weren't around in 1994-95. Or, for that matter, in 2003-04.

There are those who will point to the fact that Crawley Town have beaten bigger teams in cup competitions before, as if a shared embarassment softens the blow of defeat. I'm sure all the teams that we beat in our upward surge in the early nineties still meet at a community centre once a month and say 'Hello. My name is Liverpool (or Everton, or Arsenal, or Spurs, or Villa) and I was beaten by Bolton Wanderers in a cup competition', before they all commiserate with each other over a cup of coffee. A teams reputation as a giant killer shouldn't mean that you should be next. Sure, Crawley are upwardly mobile, but they are still a League One side who only managed promotion on the last day of last season.

And there are those who will say 'I'm waiting until we are ten games in before I make a decision on Owen Coyle'. Having now been knocked out of the League Cup, that tenth game becomes either Leeds at home or Millwall away at the beginning of October. Millwall away. I can think of better places on which to rest your decision.

The fact is that last night Bolton controlled a game without being particularly amazing until the decision was made to revert to 4-4-2 after playing 4-5-1 for seventy minutes. Despite having Gregg Wylde on the bench, Owen Coyle opted to send on Kevin Davies. SKD has had two fine games recently, but in trying to hold the game, the change ended up losing it. This isn't the first time that OC has changed the formation unnecessarily (Newcastle last season springs readily to mind) and he still appears to be making that same mistake. Despite scoring a goal on Friday, Marvin Sordell and the captain don't appear to be on the same wavelength as Afobe does with the veteran, but Afobe had already left the scene. Replacing Mavies with Wylde may have made the midfield top heavy with wingers, but they were still, at least, midfielders. And why change at all? OC has been fairly reluctant this season to use the whole bench, even when the game is won. With a two week break after Hull at the weekend, Mavies surely didn't need a rest?

People will ask, if you get rid of Owen Coyle, just who do you replace him with? And it is a question worth looking at. But how long, if you are going to get rid of him, do you leave it. If there are no viable candidates now, what makes you think there will be any viable candidates come October. The only managers to have lost their jobs this year, so far, are Andy Thorn and John Sheridan. Some more firings will take place, but not necessarily with the right name for this job.

But, why wait until Millwall? I think that this defeat, and the manner of it, beckons the axeman forward a little bit. There remains a fundamental problem at the heart of OC's tactics and he shows no sign yet of learning from his mistakes. Don't mistake this for a bandwagon jump, I'm not calling for his head. But for all the In Coyle We Trust hashtags on Twitter, there is little evidence to suggest why you should trust him and people are starting to appear to be taking it on blind faith. Injuries notwithstanding, and he was again unfortunate last night to have Vela and Afobe forced off, you need cold, hard facts to sustain that belief. And the only ones staring more and more people in the face are what matters at the end of the day. Results and performances. And we are currently lacking in both.

Still, maybe Jay Spearing is the answer. Three million appears to be the value that Liverpool have placed on the local lad who resembles a particularly unhappy pitbull on the hottest day of the year. With the transfer merry go round hotting up as we fast approach the end of August, and with money burning a hole in their pocket after the sales of Fletcher and Jarvis, Wolves have emerged as rivals for his signature. There is also the small matter of Mark Davies. With Moussa Dembele likely to replace Luka Modric at Spurs, Fulham are looking for an attacking midfielder and Mavies would fit that frame. Maybe his mind has been on other issues since the opening day, which is why his performances have been below par. Despite OC's protestations that Mavies is going nowhere, the trickle down effect from the Modric transfer should have the money talking. If, however, Mavies stays, you would expect his performances to get better. He is too good for this level.

As is CYL, who became the latest victim of being of the same ethnicity as someone else and then being said to be somewhere whilst being somewhere else. A bit like Daniel Sturridge and Danny Welbeck. A male from the Far East was spotted at Stoke City and, putting two and two together and coming up with any number other than four, it was assumed to be LCY, despite the fact that the photo shows a man who could have come from any part of the world as far apart as Vietnam and Outer Mongolia. LCY, for the record, was in Crawley. Although he may have preferred to be in Stoke.

Although we know that no one would ever prefer to be in Stoke.

And with jibe at those less fortunate, let's call that the morning. Big up yourselves and have a good one.

Like you said you didn't watch the match against Forest and to anyone without a negative, clouded mind it was a good performance by Bolton! Read a proper Bolton supporters blog one you pointed out Smurfs now he is a PROPER Bolton supporter! No whinging no moaning just the facts about the team he loves and supports without the bile about how bad we are playing and how the manager should be sacked! The only one you are praising is Mark Davies and he's been playing crap for a while now! "beckons the axeman forward a little bit" does it really in who's eyes? Not anyone that matters!

BTW it was 94 when we beat Arsenal in the FA Cup and went on a run i was there!

Great write up, it's hard to find positives regarding the manager at the moment apart from he's a lovely bloke and loves the Wanderers. But his team selections, tactics and motivational qualities are now seriously under scrutiny. I said last season that several of these players are not good enough for the Championship never mid the Premier and I stand by that, but they should have been able to cope at Crawley (no disrespect intended at all). A decent central midfielder would be a start, someone who can hold the ball and bring others into play and link things up. We have had 18 months to sort this since Holden was injured and it has still not been addressed.

last nights defeat was yet another football disaster to add onto the pile. Managers all have different styles and ability, some instill a winning competetive mentality into their players teaching them collective playing skills from which a team develops good defensive / attacking ability, constantly improving in confidence and consistency, such managers bring out the best in a players ability. Other managers display complete inability in the aforesaid, their teams fail to improve their performances, lacking the confidence to defend or attack with strength of purpose, at worst a losing mentality takes over from which defeat becomes aceeptable for whatever excuse is thrown at it at the time, defeat should never be acceptable. To the unbiased Coyle has not been a sucess as our manager his track record is dreadful, judged against were we where when he took over and where we now stand, a ski slope moving in the wrong direction. Most dangerously for me his track record in the transfer market has been shocking, a club will ultimately improve or fail against the backdrop of a managers ability to pick out talent as oppossed to dross, in the construction industry it is said ' you can never polish a t-rd' and the same applies in football, we will never know if Gartside influences which players come in and which players leave, we do know the quality of incoming players has been average at best and worse, with only the loan players showing any class. Coyle has spent well in excess of £10 million on players whose return on the pitch suggest that money has been thrown away, wasted. I have always beliefed Coyles weaknesses and failings were polarised following the semi final defeat to Stoke, the team has declined ever since and that is based on fact not opinion. Transfer dealings last season ultimately led to our relegation even though it should be acknowledged relegation the previous season was avoided on the back of Daniel Sturrage. Big Sam turned us into a playing club of equal status with Fulham/ Sunderland, etc. Coyle has degraded everything he inherited, on reflection the ' ginger one' was a superior manager even if his PR skills were solely lacking. It is difficult to see any positives coming from the team this season, some players have done well, Eagles as an example , but team performance as a whole remains very poor, reflected in our inability to score goals and blame for poor team performance sits squarely on Coyles shoulders. He should have been sacked at the start of last season, now it all appears far to late.

Even though I'm not totally against Coyle I have been looking at other alternatives. Suitable managers who are without a job at the moment consists of Alan Curbishlely and Mick McCarthy, both proven managers at this level and above. There are also young managers in league 1 who we could probably 'steal' like Karl Robinson who has done a great job at MK dons with a budget a lot smaller than Bolton’s. So to the fans who say there is no one to replace Coyle there are three candidates without even considering different leagues.

It seems OC's epitaph will read "We never reached the levels that we are capable of" which he trots out after every bad game before "dusting ourselves off" and "going again" - to another bad performance usually. Seriously, even when we win it isnt convincing and more to do with luck or the ineptitiude of the opposition. The change to a 4 4 2 when we were winning shows his lack of tactical ability perfectly. Quentin - you say that you aren't calling for his head but your article doesn't read that way and really why shouldn't it?

To be fair i think Alan Curbishley is the only one i would consider out of that bunch. Its a tough call choosing a new manager there isnt anyone who really jumps out that A - is any good and B- Would want to manage us. I think maybe initially a shake up of the back room staff is necessary as has been mentioned before. What does Sandy Stewart do? No really does anyone know? Owen Coyle is out of his depth tactically and motivationally now. If he is to remain and succeed he needs help. Is it possible Sammy Lee could replace Sandy Stewart? What about Phil Brown to come in as Coach, loves the club and would certainly freshen up things behind the scenes?
Danfarn80
He's cost us multiple times with tactis, vs norwich, newcastle, WBA, forest, crawley and the list goes on. Unless he improves tactically he's gonna have to go. And I think the person who went the furthurest was you when you where like "burn down the reebok, kill gatrside and davies and feed coyle to davies' donkeys".

Can't tell if mickbwfc is being sarcastic.....anyway, you're right about the season and it's been corrected. Will teach me to write at 2am...

“Fair play to Crawley they pushed on and chased the game, but my disappointment is that we conceded two late goals. We never reached the levels that we are capable of or gained any fluency or cohesion in the game. Cant believe he said it again. I wonder what these levels we are capable of look like, are they real cos if we cant reach them playing lower league teams we are stuffed!
Danfarn80
O.C. cannot complain that fans question his tactics. In my opinion we should not get rid of him because he has many good qualities. However, the assistant manager seems never to be involved in any blame. He should be giving O.C. solid tactical advice rather than just being a yes man. Unfortunately, O.C. is not the sort to sack a friend and so the current state of affairs will continue until they are both relieved of their duties. If we get Spearing this will be the last throw of the dice for O.C. Lets hope it brings a change of fortune.
norjoy
I totally agree with the tactical downfall of O.C, but did you see the defending for the two goals? And all the goals we've conceded when reverting to the 442? Is it because we revert, or is it because the opposition is on the ascendency and the goal 'is coming' regardless of formation? This doesn't excuse Coyle because both are his fault, ultimately... Each goal we've conceded this season, within the screen shot, stands the image of a certain Zat 'Plank' Knight pointing to an attacking player UNMARKED! And as Plank is stood alone, no guesses to whom should be marking the unmarked player? Doesn't matter what formation you play, when you have defenders like Knight manning the forte, you're gunna concede... period!!

Danfarn80-great shout concerning Phil Brown as coach; our best days were when he was working alongside Allardyce. I'd be happy with McCarthy as manager. Is it true that Coyle has appointed his brother as kit man?
