'If It's Football, It's Vital'

Bolton Wanderers: Ta. Ra.

So, how are you doing? Two days now since the guillotine slammed down on Bolton Wanderers neck and our Premier League heads tumbled into the basket below. It still doesn`t seem real somehow, and yet we have to face the reality that next season will be one of visits to Barnsley and Millwall rather than Stretford and Anfield. Next season, rather than Aguero and Rooney, The Reebok will be graced with the talents of Grant McCann and Paul Robinson. No, the other one who isn`t a goalkeeper.

And it will be hard. You only need to look at the three teams relegated last season to know that. Only one of them will be promoted and, along with either West Ham or Blackpool and Birmingham, there will be the two that came down with us as well as Brighton, Cardiff, Leeds, Leicester, Middlesbrough and one, and possibly two, Sheffield clubs. To get anything out of next season, we will have to hit the ground running. To gain automatic promotion, we are going to have to win twenty six or seven games and lose no more than eleven. That is a hard challenge in any division and to do it we are going to need stability.

And stability means keeping the manager. I`m no Owen Coyle apologist. Mistakes were made this season and whilst everyone can point to injuries and fixtures, they don`t tell the whole story. However, he has history of getting clubs out of this division (alright, it was only the once) and should have the core of the same team, with one or two "like new signings", if they can be kept hold of.

Early reports suggest that Nigel Reo-Coker will be activating the little known clause in his contract that allows him to leave on a free due to the relegation. Whilst some say this is done and dusted, the local press feel that he will take his time to make a decision. However, you would be a fool to bet against him moving on. He is a good midfield player, even if his distribution is a little circumspect, and will certainly be on the radar of many Premier League clubs after some of his performances this year. He is still young, he`s free and is certainly better than Championship class. So while he says this:

"I feel like I`ve been emotionally attached to the club and it`s really hard to accept because I`m not just a footballer for the sake of it. I don`t walk away and think of it as just an occupation."

with Newcastle already being mentioned as a suitor, his head could be turned. And you couldn`t really blame him.

Other players you would expect to go are Ivan Klasnic, Robbie Blake and Sean Davis. I don`t think that the latter two will be missed one little bit, unfortunately for Davis who was so unlucky to suffer a major injury that makes Stuart Holden`s look like a picnic, albeit a picnic with pins in your knee. Blake should never have been signed, let alone offered a new contract and whether or not he has an "infectious" personality, it certainly didn`t do much good in the long run. As for Klasnic, with the pace in the second tier possibly faster than in the Premier League, you get the impression that the game would pass him by.

Of the others, you would expect Jussi, Sam Ricketts and Bibi to be offered new contracts, although on a much smaller scale. SKD looks to be here for another season and his signing should give the other three the impetus to put pen to paper.

And then there is Zat Knight. Despite apparently being on West Ham`s radar, his performance on Sunday (poor) was equal to most of the season (poor, very poor, abysmal and Howard the Duck in equal measure). However, the injury to David Wheater means that we are down one central defender and the club may be thinking it is better the devil you know.

One word. DON`T. To whoever arranges contracts at Bolton Wanderers, I don`t care if Zat Knight`s agent has sent some men round to your house and are threatening to cut off your ten year old daughter`s fingers one by one and sending them to you in the post. You really have to take one for the team. Besides, they can do amazing things with prosthetics these days and I`m sure that in about ten years she will bring herself to forgive you. There is no excuse to resign Zat Knight. Few wanted him when he arrived, fewer want him now. This will make the contract extension to Robbie Blake look like the epitome of reasonableness.

There is always the loan or free market to get someone to partner Tim Ream until Wheater's return, although Mark Connolly's announcement on Twitter that he is leaving the club means we are light on cover. Whatever, Zat Knight`s time at Bolton has to be over. We should all rejoice.

Right, let`s get down to the main event. Fantasy League time. First of all, congratulations to the team of the week, AFC Nano, and the team of the month for May, SKD Wanderers. Once again, you win nothing but a warm glow.

However, the Team of the Year, Bradley Lane FC, aren`t that unlucky and win a mug of their choice from Bolton Central. If Kris C could send an email by the usual channels and let us know which one they want. And Gill, if you could send me one as well and let me know which one you want for last season. I will get them. Honest.

_______________________

And the player of the month for May. With a man of the match performance against Spurs and a third place against West Brom, Tim Ream comes ahead of Martin Petrov and SKD. We now start our polls for players by position, so vote on the right for defender by Friday.

And with that, we`ll get back to you tomorrow. By the way, the photo that adorns this article is London Road, home of Peterborough. It holds less than 16,000 people. Good lord.

So if there's no Kinght, Weater, now Connolly and obviously Boyata, we are going to need a new CD, but I dout we can attract a half decent one.
Muur
How come Connolly is leaving? Despite what Garty said the Academy hasn't really produced has it? Some of them who are still waiting for their chance in the first team are surely near retirement age by now - looking at you Obadeyi.

I am glad the season is finished and over 38 games we deserved to get relegated because we were rubbish. I am looking forward to the championship as we may even win a game despite OC tactics.

IMO, Jussi will stay at least in the North-West, as he's just had a huge new house built and his kids are at Bolton School. More than likely he'll stay with us. Steinsson hasn't been offered one (apparently), S'oton and West 'am are reportedly interested in Knight, Robbo...Cardiff? Please, for the love of God, just let him go somewhere. Same goes for Kryten. Personally, I don't think Bibi'll be offered one; I'd put money on him joining our claret 'n' blue reserve team. Davis won't, Petrov won't, Blake won't, K. Davies will be offered a new contract. Mavies and NRC to Newcastle? Maybe. Guthrie doesn't appear to be signing a new contract with them, so they could use the cover. Swap? If he gets no PL offers and Coyle blackmails him with naughty photos. :)

Just read that Guthrie's Going to Villa with Leon Best. Apparently Coyle couldn't get the photos printed off in time. :/

After a long hard season i feel somewhat relieved..We deserved to go down make no mistake about that..the shame and fear is that it probably could have been avoided..We all know the weak players that were selected and the tactical weakness and only 2 (I think) clean sheets all season.. What suprises me is the lack of forsight in certain departments..Yes the buck stops with Coyle but what worries me is the team behind him..Sandy et al...the results of the reserves, the defensive frailties the lack of goals from set pieces..the guile in getting freekicks in an around the box..thats whats was lacking..Coyles coaching staff have a lot to answer for and I feel that they are not good enough..yes I see that sammy lee was bought back perhaps he should be involved with first team next year? on another note I am exceptionally pleased to see the back of Reo coker...an arrogant self rightous player who spent the whole season going through the motions.....Undoubtably a good player on the ball but as Ive said before a very clever player and disguising his laziness.. Be honest when did you see his feet leave the ground to challenge a header or see him break into anything more than a firm jog....I knew he would be the first to announce his departure and this will be a very strong blessing in disguise. We will challenge next year and will be in or around the top 6 but we need to improve the coaching to help Coyle and quickly.

You just need to look at that list of defenders on the right (excluding Cahill) and you can see why we lost so many games and had such a poor goal difference. Old blue arms Steinsson lost the will to defend two years ago. Alonso has been a disaster with Damien Duff finally exposing him by tying him in knots. Robinson was never short on desire but started poorly and got worse as the season went on. Zat Knight, goodness where do you start, struggled heading the ball, couldn't control the ball, the anticipation of a cow, the pace of a 92 year old granny post hip replacement and then finally resorted to abandon defensive duties altogether by half-heartedly holding his arm in the air for an offside that usually didn't come, I really hope he goes to Blackburn. Mears unluckily managed to break a leg in training pre-season then appeared mid-season then disappeared just as quickly. Ricketts maybe one to keep but had a bad last few months. Boyata was poor and positionally inept. Wheater was ok but got sent off at Arsenal through poor positioning and at home to Everton for a silly late lunge near the halfway line, he has now unfortunately done his ligaments which often slow you down another yard. Ream, the jury is out for me, looked ok in some games but in others he was all over the place. Riley, what happened to him, where did he go.

So easy to say such things with hindsight, but I think some of the decisions made last summer contributed to our downfall. Namely the non-sale of Cahill in the summer which would have gained us an extra £3-4m to invest and the chance to establish a settled back four. Also the sale of Al-Habsi to relegation rivals when (and nothing against Bogdan) he should have been made first choice keeper. Of course everything that happened after that didn't help, but those two bad transfer decisions set us off on the wrong foot.

First off, in what has been a poor poor season, I have to thank you Mr X for the quality of your writing. You have kept me and plenty of others both entertained and informed with every article this season. We have all looked forward to your pieces. Your writing after Fabrice Muamba's collapse was exceptional and worthy of a career in journalism. As for the SuperWhites, a cr*p season and as you say we ended up where we deserved to end up. Relegated. OC made **** loads of tactical and selection errors but he will manager next year and is still learning the job so we all need to accept it and get behind him. Loads of older, expensive players will leave and finally the academy players will have to step up to the plate. Together with the seniors that stay (SKD, LCY, Holden, Bogdan, Alonso, Ream, Eagles, Pratley), and there is a core of a team, we have a squad. Obviously we will have to add to it on a shoestring but this could be what we need as a club. Regroup in the Championship, win games, shape a new team, cut out some dead wood and come back stronger. Last but not least, I am deeply proud of our club, as I have been for 40 years, especially as we have gone from a team that nobody liked to a team that nobody wanted to go down. And very finally we now have best friends in Tottingham...so not all was lost. Here's to a cracking season ahead!

I must support SESAMESEED for stating the obvious : selling Al -Habsi was a disaster especially to Wigan, proved himself the best goalie in the premiership, selling Cahill in a firesale was another disaster, the constant sales pitch from Coyle was utterly embarrassing, Letting Elmander walk was the worst decision, just how did Coyle think showing the door to your best striker and leading goalscorer would help a club near the bottom of the league, he then goes on to spend £8 million on strikers who could not score in an empty net. Coyle has been an utter disaster, under his control we are in the middle of a nosedive towards oblivion, I seriously feel our fans are deluded by his constant waffle, the man is useless, his record is disasterous, League one beckons
