Wheater is one of the many young players who came through at Middlesbrough and given a chance by Steve McClaren, and made 140 appearances, as well as short loan spells at Doncaster, Wolves and Darlington.

He joined Wanderers in January 2011 after a move that could have cost up to nearly £4m after appearance bonuses.

While he has been a largely steady performer for Wanderers in his time, he has suffered with regular injury problems. He was released this summer but trained with the club and earned a much reduced contract.
