Wigan : Beware the Revenge of Steve Bennett

They`re probably feeling quite pleased with themselves in Wigan at the moment, after last weekend`s win over money bags Manchester City. That the victory was achieved with a penalty, after a dive by Wilson Palacios that scored full marks for artistic impression won`t matter a jot. Long term, the Latics may come to regret it.

In January 2005, El Hadji Diouf won a penalty at Blackburn. It wasn`t so much a dive as a triple salko. The referee that day was Steve Bennett, who officiated at the JJB on Sunday. Bennett got his revenge a few weeks later, sending off Diouf for a handbags at ten paces incident with Jens Lehman in an FA cup tie with Arsenal. Three weeks later Bennett was in charge at Anfield where he awarded Bolton five free kicks, compared to the seventeen that went Liverpool`s way.

Since that day at Ewood when Diouf went to ground in such spectacular fashion, Bolton have won only one game when Bennett has been on duty. Makes you think doesn`t it?

Watch the playback carefully. Palacios was pushed, two-handed, after his foot was trapped. Steve Bennett did very well.

If his foot was trapped, how did he manage to leap into the air?

It looked like there was minimal contact but Palacios definitely over did it!
