# BWFC: Fag-Packet Maths

A 'comment' from yardinhio. Maybe he's onto something. Who knows, Phil and Eddie may read this...

I did some fag packet maths in the pub the other day with a mate.

I had a season ticket last year and am yet to renew it this year (despite the club doing it automatically for me as I was on the Direct Debit scheme. (Cheeky...). I will probably end up getting one but think the club is really missing a trick.

Last season we had 13,000 season tickets holders. If they pay on average, £350 each, that equates to £4,550,000. If each of these people spend a fiver a match (pie and a drink), that's £65,000 a game or £1,495,000 per season We are in one of the busiest areas in terms of football clubs in the country (I'm sure you can now start naming them to yourself) and as such, we have to start competing with these clubs. Now we clearly can't compete in terms of the quality of football, but what we can do is compete in terms of value for money. If we dropped the season ticket price to £200 then we would attract a lot more people down to the Reebok... Off the top of my head, I can already think of 4 of my mates who would. Most people don't get a season ticket because they can't commit to every-week games. It's too pricey. They just decide to go to the games most desirable. If season tickets were reduced to £200, I believe we have a good shot at selling 20,000 season tickets. That's £4,000,000 in season ticket revenues- only 500k down on where we are now. However, if each one of those ticket holders spend a fiver on a pie and a drink, that`s £100,000 a game, or £2.3 million a year. So if we were to drop the ticket prices, the club would actually make more money, have a rocking stadium for every game and reconnect with the fans.

Fag packet maths and hungover logic..?

Change to most recent first
I've a feeling that the booze and pies they sell in the ground is franchised out but I agree with the general principle. Another side of this is that cheaper tickets = fuller ground = better atmosphere to get behind the team. Would be nice if Season Tickets extended to cup games too.

they should have a free competition for all season ticket holders, 1st prize a free season ticket for the next year, 2nd prize two free season tickets . on a more serious note, I am all for low prices to attract young fans, free for under 13's, 2 for 1 offers, etc. No point having a stadium that's always half empty, just like my glass !

Top maths ...plus given the length of the queues there'd be the bonus of income from overnight stays in the Whites Hotel on friday nights so people could be sure to get a pie and pint before the game kicks off ..winner all round!!

There are loads of sleeping fans out there, that need waking up. Something like this would work. If we could get the ground full, all behind the lads on the pitch, teams wouldn't want to come here, it would give the players a boost, attract better players maybe and build the future of the club. The point about young fans is bang on - they have so many Premier League teams to follow and it's easy to follow a team that wins every week, so we need to drag them in, get them hooked like I was after sitting on the fences at the bottom of the Burnden Terrace when I was 8. We actually lost the game but that was me. Done. My team.

Good simple maths, allways believed in the theory of dropping prices, attracts more trade, and eventually surpass previous profit margin.bit like the tobacco industry used to do,sell them cheap, get them hooked and they'll stay wi you for life ;-) !i reckon there's a lot of whites fans who got hooked when we were kids after going to burnden for the first time.even when the lure of united and other "bigger"clubs was all around.arsenal do a similar thing, they knock cup tickets out for a tenner a shout, and also throw in a season ticket if you buy one of the apartments in the redeveloped highbury site.simple economics, sell it cheap, sell more, bigger profit, fuller stadium, winner all round.

It's worth pointing out that even in the most expensive "normal" area of the ground, under 12 season tickets cost £65 and under 18 season tickets cost £75 - so £2.83 and £3.26 per match respectively. Don't forget about car park revenue as well - they charge £6 to park and I reckon there's around 4000 cars there every match on average, that's another half a million a year that they could nearly double. All that said, if you look at the last set of accounts (http://www.bwfc.co.uk/documents/burnden-leisure-ar-2012-web-ready201-470561.pdf), the gate receipts of £5.72m are only down half a million from £6.26m between 2011 and 2012, and actually bring in less money than the hotel. We're spending £55.3m on staff wages and have an operating loss of £23.6m, suggesting that if we're sticking around in the Championship for a while we either need to cut around half the playing staff, preferably those who were signed during the Premiership era, or start making a lot more money from player sales. Whilst I'd love to see Anelka return to the Reebok as a spectator, as a fan I'd have to suggest that perhaps we need to look towards the cheaper end of the market and get the costs under control before we begin to look upwards at the Promised Land.

Well pointed out Rob, I know of no other paid entertainment that is this reasonably priced for teens. You should not give away free ST under a particular age unless accompanied by an adult - otherwise we could have a stack of unsupervised kids on our hands ! Introdcution of DD was a great idea to make it more affordable...... In the end as an adult you make choices as to how to spend your money as I can't see the club reducing prices anytime soon.

Another thought, if you reduced prices to get bums on seats, who says the people who found it hard to afford a season ticket (the original reason for them not buying one I presume) would buy a pie and a pint at those costs !! A round the other week put a massive dent in a £20, maybe the way forward is cheaper pies and pints for OSS already there, hoping they'll spend time in eye ground spending money rather than in he surrounding pubs...

Fair points from Rob and Chicory. The balance sheet obviously doesn't lie but, like all statistics, can be used and interpreted in many ways to support or refute argumnets based on entrenched positions. I work in a school and the biggest percentage of our expenditure by far goes on staff salaries - I'm sure a lot of "businesses" are in the same position (but don't forget that most business' prime asset is its staff) - football clubs could well be the worst offenders here, spending an eye-watering percentage of turnover on salaries (over 100% in some cases). While we are in the Championship we probably need to turn back the years and take a punt on players from lower divisions (C.Davies against N.Anelka); players with talent, albeit not PL quality, but with added scrapability. Davies could get us 15 goals a season, Anelka maybe 20; is it reasonable to pay the latter 10 times more for 5 more goals? As for all the other stuff - ticket prices, pie'n'pint prices. programmes, car parking, hotel rooms, club shop, etc - it's all down to imagination/creativity/desire versus bottom line. As has been noted BWFC operate in a highly competitive area of a competitive sector and the need for increased bums on seats is multi-directional. How PG, our very own Capt Ahab, deals with the revenue shortfall, the debt repayment to ED and the need to change the way the club operates in a changing football/economic universe is a matter for conjecture. I do hope and recommend that he reads this site. It could give him food for thought.

I like your positive outlook Fred. I however doubt big phil entertains our little corner of planet bwfc. I'm sure he has someone who reads it for him though, I would love to be wrong!! Maybe one of us is big phil undercover seeing what the fans think. My money is on Aussie mike or Bowton. How about a poll to see who we all think it could be?

Now I've got that out of my system, I have to agree we can't afford Anelka. However maybe just maybe he would come back and help rejuvinate the club that rejuvinated his career a few years ago. He surely doesn't need the money so come on nic. you know you loved it at the estadio de Reebok. Come and play for the enjoyment of it and show football the way out of the darkness. Do you think he is reading this? Yeah me too.

Love it...Aussie Mike is The Secret Chairman!! As for Anelka...Beckham played for free at PSG so there is a precedent (I know he cost the club & gave it to charity). Maybe PG is actually the Mr Burns of BWFC. Those attendance figures really do reinforce the discussion have been having. It really would be short sighted to respond to the drop in revenue caused by the fall in attendance by simply raising ticket prices by the same amount. Between the lot of us on here we could come up with far more creative schemes with multiple benefits along the lines of the ideas suggested on here already. Hopefully Mr Burns has a Smithers to read the blogs for him!

Trying to improve the squad with little money available is extremely difficult, success is down to clever judgement and maybe some good fortune, I recall O.C. spending millions and failing so money alone cannot guarantee success. With both good judgement and money you rarely ever lose. I know the club has few options but it needs to remind itself if it is serious about mounting a promotion push next season then it must produce a team that's fit for that purpose at the earliest opportunity and should therefore invest the necessary funds right away. It would be very dangerous to gamble on available 'low cost' players now, only to later gamble under panic conditions next January with the season at half way. If this last season has taught us anything at all it must surely be hesitation and optimism can never overcome bad results, a woeful start will surely come back to haunt you at the death. Given the increased urgency for success next season we need to hit the ground running, hence this close season must be put to good use and any big decisions should be taken sooner not later
